A major high street brand asked us to look at removing unnecessary void in their packing process whilst guaranteeing that we could fulfil their zero-damage requirement through the logistics and supply chain process.
We have 70 years of expertise in corrugated design to protect products but felt that something special was needed following a drop test procedure carried out by the customer. This required us to throw a glass jar full of product 8ft against a brick wall and landing it on the same substrate. To be honest, we went through many trials and guess what? As expected, after the third throw in a row, the jar broke! You might be thinking “That’s not the most scientific or successful of drop tests” but it was definitely amusing!
Before we came in with our genius idea of a drop test, our client was using a corrugated box lined with polystyrene which they were desperate to replace. We were not about to give up and as always, had another alternative option up our sleeves.
Moulded pulp was the answer. We set about working around a pulp clamshell that would pass this mad drop test and be of multi-purpose use designed to work around several sized jars.
By introducing a multi-purpose use pulp clamshell, Switch Packaging successfully eliminated the use of polystyrene packaging with a major high street brand in Sri Lanka.
With great support from our client, we have managed to stop one factory on the beautiful island of Sri Lanka sending polystyrene to a landfill site or waste disposal unit. This definitely put a big smile on the face of all Switchers and still does, we set out to remove plastic and polystyrene and the fight continues.
